Kyle Teel, as the number-two prospect in the Chicago White Sox system, has quickly jumped onto the scene since his call-up. The former first-round pick of the Boston Red Sox touts a .277/.390/.373 slash line thus far. This shows he has shown no issues adjusting to MLB pitching since his debut. He owns a strikeout rate of about 27%, but this is likely due to just going deep into counts. He has a well above average chase rate accompanying it.

Teel’s on-base percentage is no mistake, either. Kyle has been holding a .387 xwOBA. His Hard-Hit Rate and Average Exit Velocity are a touch above average, but his expected slugging percentage is .498. This would be phenomenal for a rookie. Sure, Teel may only have one home run and five doubles, but his power is yet to come. Expect him to continue to put together games like he had in Tampa Bay. He should incur more positive regression soon.

In fact, the last two weeks (since July 12), Teel has registered a .632 slugging percentage. Although his BABIP may be high, the positive power results are already surfacing for Kyle.

Teel, as of Friday afternoon, holds a 122 wRC+ in 28 MLB games. Amongst Major League catchers with 50-plus plate appearances, Teel ranks 11th in wRC+. He ranks just below Sean Murphy of the Atlanta Braves and above Alejandro Kirk, Ryan Jeffers, and Victor Caratini. The sample size is small for Teel, but it is growing. Given his consistency at the plate, it would make sense that he continues his upward trajectory in the White Sox lineup.

One advantage Teel has is getting the ball in the air. His line-drive percentage is about equal to where he stood in AAA Charlotte before being called up to the big leagues. However, a sub-37.5% groundball rate will play for a player with 20-plus home run potential. Since Kyle Teel can still hit the ball hard, this is yet another indicator. He should see continued success in the power numbers over the next couple of months.

Now, scouts touted Teel as a better defensive catcher than Edgar Quero. However, shockingly, both have comparable defensive metrics. It will be interesting to see how manager Will Venable handles the two of them going forward. Yes, both play the same position. It would not be out of the question to see one at designated hitter, while the other is behind the dish.

Teel does have experience in the outfield from college. It would be a bit unorthodox to try him at one of the corner outfield spots. However, to get Kyle Teel and Quero in the lineup, with a lack of future outfield talent anyway, it would not hurt to see what he has out there within the next year.

Either way, the White Sox have a solid catcher and player in Teel. He has proven he can hit with the best of them already. It will be exciting to see him continue to thrive on the South Side.
