Joy quickly turned into shock and concern throughout the Pirates’ dugout.
While celebrating Andrew McCutchen’s two-run double that gave the Pirates the lead for good in a 4-3 win over the Cubs on Wednesday, Pittsburgh’s players noticed a horrific scene in right field.
O’Neil Cruz pointed toward that direction, before others started doing the same.

A fan had fallen from the right-field bleachers — situated 21 feet in the air — in a horrifying scene at PNC Park.
The fan remains in critical condition at a Allegheny General hospital and the situation is being handled as an accident, according to an update early Thursday morning from Pittsburgh Public Safety.

The man, who is in his 20s, suffered a skull fracture, according to KDKA in Pittsburgh.
“Even though its 350 feet away or whatever it is, the fact of how it went down and then laying motionless while a play’s going on, (Cubs manager) Craig (Counsell) saw it, I saw it, we both got out there, I think the umpires saw it unfortunately because of the way the ball kicked,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said after the game. “It’s extremely unfortunate. That’s an understatement.”
Shelton spoke on behalf of the organization Wednesday night since the team closed its clubhouse following the harrowing scene, according to MLB.com.

The sixth-year manager reportedly only discussed the concern regarding the fan during a brief postgame press conference with reporters.
“I want to offer thoughts and prayers with the incident that happened earlier in the game,” Shelton said after the Pirates improved to 12-19. “Thank both our medical staff, the Cubs’ medical staff, EMS, everybody that got to the gentleman. Just ask everybody keep him in your prayers.”
Chilling videos from the game showed a fan in the seventh inning falling over the rail in the right-field seats, situated 21 feet above the ground in honor of Pirates legend and Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente.

The fan flipped several times before hitting the ground, and EMTs and medical staff quickly attended to him before removing him on a stretcher.
Another fan even ran onto the field in an attempt to help.
Players took knees around the field while the game halted for roughly 10 minutes, per MLB.com.

“Tonight, during the seventh inning of the game at PNC Park, an adult male fell from the right field bleachers onto the field of play,” the Pirates said in a statement. “Pittsburgh EMS, as well as the Pirates and Cubs athletic training teams and other PNC Park personnel reacted and responded immediately and administered care. He was transported to Allegheny General Hospital. No further information is available at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”
McCutchen offered support on X to the fan late Wednesday night.
“Truly hate what happened tonight,” the longtime Pirates star tweeted. “Cant help but think about that guy, his family and friends. I pray tonight for him. Let us think about his loved ones and hug our families a little tighter tonight. I hope he pulls thru. May God Bless you all. Good night 🙏🏾.”
