On Sunday, May 11, all the Padres’ minor league affiliates recorded wins, finishing 4-0.
Here is a recap of the day’s events.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 8-4 vs Round Rock) (20-19 on the season)
Oscar Gonzalez – 3-for-4, Three-Run Home Run
Eguy Rosario – 2-for-4, Double, Run Scored
Ryan Bergert – 2.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K (50 pitches – 31 strikes)
Seven El Paso pitchers combined to hold the visiting Round Rock Express to four runs on six hits, striking out 12 times. There certainly was some stopping this train, as Ryan Bergert made his return to the rotation with 2.1 innings of two-run ball on 50 pitches. While the right-hander’s fastball did not have the same eye-popping iVB it did in the majors, Bergert was able to lean on his slider to limit opponents to three of seven outs on the ground. Austin Krob made another relief appearance, this time 0.2 scoreless innings. With the abundance of starting options with the Chihuahuas, Krob could see some relief work with El Paso, which could lead him to the MLB bullpen after the struggles of Wandy Peralta. Kevin Kopps struck out three in two innings, while David Morgan struck out the side in his lone inning of relief. Morgan dominating the PCL while maintaining his velocity and spin is impressive, and backs up his early-season dominance. Ron Marinaccio and Reiss Knehr tossed scoreless frames to close out the win.

Oscar Gonzalez had three hits in the win, including a rocket of a three-run home run. Six of the team’s nine starters ended the game with a base hit, with Luis Campusano and Eguy Rosario doubling in the game. Rosario scored two runs, and Forrest Wall scored three runs, reaching base three times in the win. Tirso Ornelas had a sacrifice fly in the ballgame, driving in his 11th run of the season. The team stole three bases in the game against rehabbing Rangers catcher Kyle Higashioka, and the lineup finished 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position in the game.

San Antonio Missions (Won 2-1 vs Frisco) (17-16 on the season)
Brandon Valenzuela – 1-for-4, Go-Ahead Home Run
Ripken Reyes – 1-for-3, RBI Single
Braden Nett – 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K (74 pitches – 48 strikes)
Brandon Valenzuela sent the Missions crowd home happy on Mother’s Day, as his eighth-inning home run gave the Missions a 2-1 win in the series finale.

The game was a pitchers’ duel between Braden Nett and Trey Supak, and Nett performed valiantly. The Missions’ starter finished the game throwing five innings of scoreless baseball, striking out five batters. It was the kind of start the right-hander needed, and he has posted a 0.87 ERA in two starts this month. Nett looks to be finding his form at the right time, which bodes well for a surging Missions team.
Ripken Reyes gave San Antonio a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning with an RBI single, his second RBI of the season with the Missions. Reyes has seen game time with two affiliates this season. Ryan Och allowed a run on a hit in an inning of work, throwing a wild pitch that tied the game. Och has posted a 5.40 ERA in 11.2 innings this season, albeit with a much more promising 1.62 FIP. Bradgley Rodriguez earned the win with a scoreless eighth inning, and Manuel Castro (One of EVT’s 2 Padres Minor League Relievers of the Month in April) tossed a scoreless ninth to post his third save of the season.
Fort Wayne TinCaps (Won 10-3 vs South Bend) (19-14 on the season)
Braedon Karpathios – 2-for-4, Two Home Runs, Six RBI
Nerwilian Cedeno – 3-for-5, Two RBI
Eric Yost – 5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 3 K (92 pitches – 50 strikes)
Eric Yost continued to dominate in his start against South Bend on Sunday. While he didn’t rack up 11 strikeouts again, Yost pitched into the sixth inning while allowing one earned run. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 1.86 on the season, with a still-strong 3.35 FIP in 29 innings this season. Garrett Hawkins and Eiker Huizi both posted scoreless outings in the game, with Hawkins striking out three batters in 1.1 innings of work.
Braedon Karpathios had himself a career game, launching two opposite-field home runs and driving in six runs. Karpathios broke the game open in the first inning, with a grand slam turning a 1-0 lead into a 5-0 advantage. He later homered again, sending a two-run home run to left field, raising his season OPS to .797 after a slow second half of April. Sean Barnett drove in two runs in the game, and Nerwilian Cedeno finished with three hits, including an RBI double. Brandon Butterworth scored two runs, and Leo De Vries had a double, scoring a run.
Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 7-6 vs San Jose) (15-18 on the season)
Kavares Tears – 3-for-5, Go-Ahead Two-Run Double
Ryan Jackson – 1-for-5, Game-Tying Two-Run Home Run
Luis Gutierrez – 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 3 K (88 pitches – 55 strikes)
Starter Luis Gutierrez labored through four innings of work, but came out of it allowing only one run in the process. The left-hander allowed two hits and three walks, with a 24-pitch first inning setting the tone for his outing. The 21-year-old is allowing fewer hits this season, but has seen his walk rate nearly double from last season, and a .246 BABIP indicates he has gotten rather lucky this season on balls in play. Vicarte Domingo continues to get long relief innings, as he tossed 2.2 innings but allowed three runs, including a go-ahead home run to outfielder Dakota Jordan. Domingo has some of the most impressive swing-and-miss stuff in the California League, but he has been somewhat susceptible to hard contact this season. Jimmy Reyes allowed a solo home run in the eighth inning, putting the Storm down 5-4 in the eighth inning.
This is where the offense’s performance comes into play. Kaden Hollow had a two-run double in the fourth inning, giving Lake Elsinore a 2-0 lead. After falling behind 4-2, Ryan Jackson tied the game in the eighth inning with a two-run home run, knotting the game at four. After Reyes allowed a go-ahead home run, Yendry Rojas led off the ninth with a walk and advanced to third on a wild pitch and groundout. With one out, catcher Victor Duarte tied the game with an RBI single. After a Kasen Wells single, Ryan Jackson was called out on strikes. With two on and two outs, Kavares Tears lined a double to the opposite field, giving Lake Elsinore a 7-5 lead.
Reyes returned to the mound in the ninth, allowing a walk and two hits to score a run and put runners on the corners with no outs and the game now at 7-6. Reyes got a forceout at home against Xander Darby before being pulled in favor of Adam Conrad. Three days after posting 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, Conrad got a weak fly ball for out number two and struck out Robert Hipwell swinging to end the game, recording his first professional save.
