HARRISBURG – The Brookings Cubs lost their final regular season game on Sunday as they fell to the Harrisburg Woodies, 12-2 in seven innings.

Brookings led 2-0 at the end of the first. Rhett Zelinsky hit a one-out single but was then thrown out at second on a ground ball from Chase McDaniel. Arlen Peters then came to the plate and hit the ball over the left field fence to make it 2-0.

Harrisburg took the lead in the bottom of the second. M Abrahamson was walked to start the inning and then K Zimmerman hit a two-run home run to tie the game. P Boyd then scored on a M Scherer single and then Scherer scored on an error to make it 4-2. 

A lead-off home run from Zimmerman in the bottom of the third made it 5-2. Abrahamson came to the plate with two runners on in the bottom of the fourth and launched the ball over the left field fence to make it 8-2.  Then Scherer came to the plate with the bases loaded later in the inning and he hit the ball over the left field fence as well to push the lead to 12-2.

Brookings was unable to score any more runs and the game ended due to the 10-run rule.

The Cubs had seven hits. Peters was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Zelinsky was 2-for-3. Isaac Bonner and McDaniel were each 1-for-3.

Zach Shastay got the start for the Cubs and pitched four innings. He gave up 12 runs, 11 earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts and seven walks. Jake Ammann pitched two innings and gave up no runs and no hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

The Cubs finished the regular season with a record of 11-6. Brookings will play a three-game regional playoff series against the Baltic River Dawgs this weekend. Game one is set for 5:30 p.m. on Friday and game two will follow. If there is a game three it will be played at 7 p.m. on Friday.
