When the All-Star game arrived, the Texas Rangers were 48-49. Houston had a comfortable 9.5 game lead over their in state rival.
One week after the break and things have significantly changed. The Rangers have lost once in 9 tries, while the Astros are currently coming off being swept in a 4-game series against the Athletics.
Just a few short weeks ago we were discussing on the Ranger Report Podcast which Texas players should be moved at the trade deadline. Now the Rangers sit just 4 games back of Houston and hold the third wild card spot.
The Turn Around
It’s hard to say what caused the turn around, but it is easy to see that it has happened. Not many teams have a 8-1 homestand that includes 2 series sweeps.
Remember, the loss to Detroit was also a very close game that the Rangers only lost 2-1. Their pitching is unbelievable and their bats have come alive.
Obviously they can’t keep the pace they are, but it is a good start. The other problem when you are almost 10 games out at the All-Star break is you need the teams in front of you to falter.
Fortunately for the Rangers the Astros are faltering, but we all know that it will not last. They are too good and have too many player coming back from the injured list.
The Trade Deadline
The Rangers don’t need a lot at the deadline. A right handed bat and a bullpen arm should help immensely.
They may be able to continue playing winning baseball with what they already have. They are obviously not in the post-season yet, and they are far from division champs.
It is ok to have hope after watching this stretch of baseball, but the hope needs to be realistic.
When a team is playing as good as the Rangers are at this moment, it is easy to forget that they were not playing so well recently.
Be sure to enjoy this stretch of baseball, and lets hope it lasts for a few more weeks, or even months.
