Yankees JC Escarra takes grounders at third base
With DJ LeMahieu’s release, the Yankees might require some additional infield versatility, so catcher-first baseman JC Escarra is taking grounders at third base, alongside Jorbit Vivas, who was just recalled from Triple-A. Escarra saw limited time at third base in the minors.
It’s the third matchup of a four-game series between the Yankees (57-49, second in AL East) and Rays (54-53, fourth in AL East) from Yankee Stadium on Prime Video this evening.
The Rays took the series opener in this divisional contest, taking care of business with a 4-2 win over the Yankees on Monday night in the Bronx.
With the losses continuing to pile up for the Bronx Bombers (4-6 since All-Star Break) and the Blue Jays widening their lead to 5.5 games in the AL East heading into Wednesday, the Yankees need answers sooner rather than later with the July 31 trade deadline rapidly approaching and only two months left in the regular season.
Following this series, the Yankees and Rays will face off one more time in the regular season, a two-game set at George M. Steinbrenner Field next month on Aug. 19 and 20.
Yankees vs Rays pitching probables
On the mound for the Yankees will be Will Warren (6-5, 4.82 ERA). The 26-year-old right-hander pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowed two runs and five hits with seven strikeouts in a no-decision effort in his last start versus the Phillies on July 25. It was a nice bounce back spot for Warren after he surrendered five runs, three walks and two home runs in only 3 2/3 innings in his first start after the All-Star Break on July 19 against the Braves.
Zack Littell (8-8, 3.72 ERA) gets the start for the Rays. The veteran right-hander is looking for better results in the Bronx this evening as he tied a season-high with 10 hits allowed and conceded five runs in six innings against the Reds in his most recent outing on July 25.
