El Pasoan Darell Hernaiz was called up by the Athletics on Tuesday after rookie shortstop Jacob Wilson was placed on the 10-day IL with a broken left forearm.

Hernaiz, who graduated from Americas High School in 2019, was playing with Triple-A Las Vegas before Tuesday’s call-up to the majors and was having a solid year with 66 runs scored, 12 steals, 50 RBI and a .305 batting average.

Hernaiz started at shortstop for the Athletics on Tuesday night, July 29, in a 6-1 win vs. Seattle, and went 1-for-4 at the plate.

Hernaiz played 48 games with the Athletics in 2024 and hit. 192 with a home run and 12 RBI. He was taken in the fifth round of the 2019 MLB Draft by the Baltimore Orioles but was later traded to the Athletics.

In the minor league portion of his career, Hernaiz is batting .297 with 262 RBI and 330 runs scored.

The Athletics are playing in Sacramento this year and will do so until a new stadium is built in Las Vegas. The Athletics shed Oakland from its name after moving operations from the city after 2024.
