Angel Reese’s play on the basketball court has become such a topic of interest that it came up Tuesday during a Major League Baseball game.
The Philadelphia Phillies were in Chicago to take on the White Sox with Tom McCarthy and John Kruk on the call for NBC Sports Philadelphia. The Phils led 6-0 in the top of the sixth when McCarthy mentioned that he wanted to send birthday wishes to the wife of his former high school basketball teammate.
“He was a heck of a basketball player,” said McCarthy. “Played at Ryder and Monmouth. It’s all because I missed a lot of shots, and he cleaned them up.”
“I don’t want to say anything, but there’s someone here in Chicago who does that a lot,” responded Kruk, alluding to the Chicago Sky star.
“Well, she gets her points,” said McCarthy after chuckling.
“She gets her rebounds, too,” added Kruk. “We’ll be getting some tweets about that, I’m sure.”

Reese puts up impressive rebound numbers, but some critics argue that her stats are inflated due to missing shots and then rebounding them herself. While those who have put in the time note that she is a “high-miss, high-motor player and still a dominant rebounder,” a subsection of newer WNBA fans continues to look for reasons not to like Reese or devalue her play. Even so, Reese is making the most of the drama.
