Former Detroit Tigers right-handed pitcher and 13-year MLB veteran Shelby Miller was dealt for the first time in his career at the trade deadline.

The Arizona Diamondbacks traded Miller — currently on the injured list with a forearm strain — alongside lefty Jordan Montgomery to the Milwaukee Brewers for a player to be named later or cash ahead of Thursday’s deadline.

Miller joined the Diamondbacks for the second time in his career over the offseason on a minor-league contract before making the team’s Opening Day roster as a reliever.

The 34-year-old previously signed with the Tigers in December 2023 for the 2024 season on a one-year, $3 million contract.

He would make 51 appearances for the Tigers, a career-high for the 2009 1st round pick, with a 4.53 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 55 2/3 innings.

Despite becoming a frequent high-leverage relief option for the Tigers during their surprise turnaround in 2024, he became the odd man out when top pitching prospect Jackson Jobe was promoted in September.

After being designated for assignment by the Tigers, Miller was placed on release waivers and became a free agent.

Miller now joins the Brewers, his 10th team in his career after debuting with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2012 and stints with the Atlanta Braves, Diamondbacks, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers and Tigers.

Initially a starting pitcher, Miller’s lone All-Star selection came in 2015 with Atlanta. He earned his spot via player balloting, holding a 2.07 ERA to that point, which was the third lowest in baseball.

For his career, Miller has a 4.03 ERA in 912 innings with 775 strikeouts. Miller started 133 of 291 games he’s appeared in, with his last start coming in 2023 for the Dodgers.
