Happy Friday, Athletics Nation!

As you well know, the A’s did not let the trade deadline pass uneventfully yesterday. Luis Severino will remain in green and gold. But closer Mason Miller, who had recently been considered off the table in trade talks, has been shipped to the Padres along with JP Sears in exchange for—wait for it—a bona fide haul of the Friars’ top prospects.

There is no doubt that the A’s endgame will suffer in the short term as a result of this transaction, but the team’s prospect depth has been greatly fortified with a new No. 1 and a trio of pitchers, all of whom are now among the A’s Top 20 per MLB Pipeline.

MLB Pipeline A’s prospect rankings
#1 SS Leo De Vries
#5 RHP Braden Nett
#9 RHP Henry Baez
#17 RHP Eduarniel Nunez
De Vries MLB’s #3 overall prospect
Nett has good FB/cutter/slider/CU but control issues & elbow/shoulder injuries
Baez has best TX Lg ERA
Nunez throws hard but wild

18-year-old shortstop Leo De Vries is now the A’s top prospect and the highest overall ranked prospect in their system to date that I can recall. De Vries has already landed in Lansing.

The A’s also nabbed No. 4 draft prospect Jamie Arnold in the first round; presumably he will be the A’s No. 2 prospect once MLB Pipeline incorporates recent draftees into their prospect rankings.

One other trade was made by the Athletics, who sent third baseman and outfielder Miguel Andujar to Cincinnati for another right handed pitcher, Kenya Huggins. The Reds’ former No. 22 prospect is now the A’s No. 27. So the A’s will have six new Top 30 prospects in total once Arnold is added to the rankings, with four of them in the Top 10.

The A’s need to shuffle their roster to fill the gaps created by the absence of Miller, Sears, and Andujar. Bill Moriarty at A’s Farm made some plausible suppositions about who will be called up as reinforcements.

This expectation has already been partially borne out with the pending callup of No. 3 prospect Luis Morales.

A’s are calling up No. 3 prospect Luis Morales, per source.

Morales shifted to a multi-inning bullpen role with Triple-A Las Vegas on June 27. Since then, he’s posted a 2.00 ERA in nine games with 20 strikeouts and 6 walks over 18 innings.

However you feel about these deadline moves, one thing is indisputable: the A’s went big this time around.

Have a wonderful weekend, AN.

The A’s are apparently wasting no time with Núñez.

And De Vries wasted no time getting his first knock with the Lugnuts.
