After a 6-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday, the New York Mets sit at 26-15 on the season. Owning a 1.5 lead over the Philadelphia Phillies, New York resides atop the National League East.

Injuries have required the Mets to reshuffle their roster several times already this season. Most recently, the Mets were forced to place left-handed hitting outfielder Jesse Winker on the 10-day injured list due to a right oblique strain. The team subsequently recalled Brett Baty from Triple-A Syracuse.

Since being recalled, Baty has gone 4-for-12 with three home runs and six RBIs, making a strong bid for more playing time.

Should Baty see more playing time at third base, the Mets will have a decision to make with Mark Vientos, who has started 33 games there this season. On Sunday, Will Sammon of The Athletic reported there is “a strong possibility” Vientos will be moved to designated hitter for Monday’s series opener against Paul Skenes and the Pittsburgh Pirates, with Baty taking over at third.

Vientos was asked if he is okay with Baty taking his spot in the infield, and delivered a one-word answer.

“Absolutely,” he said.

As Sammon noted, Baty did not start Sunday’s contest, but entered as a defensive replacement late in the game. If the Mets prefer him defensively over Vientos, then it makes sense for the latter to get more starts at DH.

Not every player is receptive to moving off their spot in the field, but Vientos was clear that he is fine with Baty taking his spot if that is what gives New York the best starting nine.
