CLEVELAND — The Guardians go for the sweep against the recently-gutted Minnesota Twins Aug. 3 at Progressive Field.

The Guardians have one-run wins in both of the first two games of the series since the trade deadline, when the Twins went into full-sell mode and gutted their bullpen, especially.

Guardians No. 4 prospect C.J. Kayfus made his MLB debut Aug. 2 and is again in the lineup for the series finale.

Here’s how the Aug. 3 Guardians-Twins game unfolded.

Guardians fall to the Twins

Daniel Schneemann and Jose Ramirez both hit flyouts, and the Guardians stranded the potential tying run at first base in a 5-4 loss to the Twins.

Brayan Rocchio drives in 2; Guardians trail Twins by 1 in 9th

The Guardians are jumping all over Twins reliever Michael Tonkin in the ninth inning.

After Kayfus’ double, Brayan Rocchio drove in two runs with a single to left field to make it 5-4 with nobody out.

Steven Kwan followed with a line-drive flyout to left field. The Twins are bringing in Erasmo Ramirez to try to record the final two outs.

C.J. Kayfus has first career hit in 9th inning against Twins

Trailing 5-2 to open the bottom of the ninth, Nolan Jones drew a walk and was followed by rookie C.J. Kayfus, who collected his first major league hit in his second start, a line-drive double to right field that will bring the tying run to the plate with nobody out.

Kody Clemens bunt extends Twins’ lead over Guardians

Matt Wallner tripled to open the eighth inning on a ball to right-center that Angel Martinez nearly caught, but couldn’t quite bring in for the out. Kody Clemens then laid down a perfect bunt down the first-base line. Kyle Manzardo actually made a pretty nice effort to try to scoop the ball with his love to Bo Naylor at the plate, but the run scored, and the Twins now lead 5-2.

Guardians trail Twins entering 8th

Neither offense has done anything since the first inning.

For the Guardians, Joey Cantillo recovered to last 5 2/3 innings, and Jakob Junis finished both the sixth and seventh innings.

The Twins bullen has managed to keep the Guardians off the board over the last few innings despite being a skeleton crew left behind after the mass exodus at the trade deadline.

Guardians, Twins score: Joey Cantillo recovers after rough 1st inning

Joey Cantillo flipped a switch after that four-run first inning, allowing just one hit over the next four innings. He also finished his day with nine strikeouts.

He got drilled in the first inning and then cruised for the next four.

It’s still 4-2 Twins entering the bottom of the fifth inning. The Guardians offense has also gone quiet. The third inning ended with a strike-em-out-throw-em-out in which Kyle Manzardo struck out and Daniel Schneemann was thrown out trying to steal third, which erased a potential rally.

Jose Ramirez home run cuts into Twins lead

Jose Ramirez has seen one pitch today, and he launched it over the right-field wall for a two-run home run in the first inning.

Ramirez now has 23 home runs this season. He entered today with a 1.063 OPS over the last month.

It’s 4-2 Twins.

Twins knock around Joey Cantillo for 4-run first inning

Anytime a mound visit with the pitching coach is needed after only 16 pitches, it’s probably not a great sign.

The Twins hit Guardians starter Joey Cantillo hard in the first inning to the tune of four runs on five hits.

The Twins opened the game with back-to-to-back singles to score a run before Royce Lewis doubled home another, leading to pitching coach Carl Willis having a word with Cantillo.

Cantillo recovered for a bit, striking out the next two hitters, but Trevor Larnach came through for the Twins with a two-out, two-run single to make it 4-0.
