Their pitching staff has struggled to find consistency, and though they managed to win a weekend series over the A’s by limiting them to just 11 runs, they were previously swept by the Tigers. The D-backs are hovering around the .500 mark at home with a 26-28 record in Phoenix.

Manny Machado continues to be the engine of San Diego’s offense, leading the team in home runs (20), RBIs (72), and batting average (.299). Across the league, he ranks ninth in batting average, 30th in OBP, and 20th in slugging, proof that he’s doing damage in every way imaginable. Tatis Jr. has added 17 homers, 63 walks, and 19 doubles to go with a .264 average, while Luis Arraez has been on a tear, hitting .415 over his last 10 games and stretching his hit streak to 16 games. Xander Bogaerts is also contributing steadily, carrying a four-game hit streak into the opener while batting .270 with 24 doubles on the year.

The Padres will give the ball to J.P. Sears, who was just acquired from the A’s last week. In his latest appearance, the southpaw gave up three runs (two earned) in 4.1 innings versus Seattle and was handed the loss. He’ll be looking to make a strong first impression in a new uniform.

Corbin Carroll continues to flash his pop with 22 home runs, good for 20th in the majors, while Ketel Marte has been Arizona’s most consistent hitter with a .288 average. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. has chipped in with modest numbers as well, hitting .244 with 12 long balls.

The D-backs will counter with right-hander Brandon Pfaadt, who’s coming off a rough outing in which he was tagged for seven earned runs in under five innings against Detroit. It’s been an uphill battle all season for Pfaadt, and Monday’s game offers a shot at redemption against a deep San Diego lineup.
