Last week was a tough one for Mets fans. The Mets got swept in San Diego by the Padres, in which they gave up more than five runs in each of these games. The Mets then hosted the Giants, where they lost this series as well. The only bright spot of the week was their lonesome 12-6 win on Saturday. Overall, the Mets went 1-5 last week, bringing their season record to 63-49.

Offensive Player of the Week: Mark Vientos

There was some buzz going around about Mark Vientos being traded at the deadline. He quieted those rumors with his bat last week. Vientos slashed .368/.368/.579 with an OPS of .947. His at-bats looked like some of the best he’s taken all year. Vientos recorded a hit in each of last week’s games. He currently has an 11-game hitting streak. Vientos’s highlight of the week was when he smashed a grand slam against the Padres on Monday. The exit velocity for this home run was 104.7 mph. Vientos almost had two home runs in this game, except Fernando Tatís Jr. made a remarkable catch to rob Vientos, spoiling his multi-home run game.

Pitcher of the Week: Reed Garrett

There was a bit of slim pickings last week for the Pitcher of the Week. Many of the starters struggled in their appearances, and the bullpen faltered at times. Reed Garrett made two appearances from the bullpen last week, one against the Padres on July 30 and one against the Giants on August 2. In his first appearance against the Padres, Garrett went 1 1/3 innings, and he struck out two and only allowed one base runner by way of a walk. He also went 1 1/3 innings in his appearance against the Giants, where he did not allow a single base runner to get on. Garrett was credited with the win during his relief appearance against the Giants.

Honorable Mention: Pete Alonso

Alonso’s slash line was not pretty last week. He slashed .143/.240/.476. He did have a solid OPS, though with a .716. Alonso gets an honorable mention for his performance in the Mets’ 12-6 win on Saturday. Alonso recorded two hits, one home run, and one double. The home run was a bomb of 428 feet, 109.4 mph off the bat. This was his 250th home run, making him just two shy of Darryl Strawberry’s Mets home run record.  He drove in three RBIs and scored two runs. Hopefully, this is the spark to reignite Alonso’s at-bats.

Up Next

The Mets have a tough schedule coming up next week. They first have a homestand against the Cleveland Guardians. The Guardians are currently 56-55, in the thick of the AL Wild Card race. Then the Mets travel to Milwaukee to take on the Brewers, who currently boast the MLB’s best record at 67-44. This can be a taste of fall baseball, as the Mets could see both of these teams in the postseason. Â
