One day after allowing the Kansas City Royals to climb back into a game that should have been well in hand, Red Sox right-hander Jorge Alcala has been cut loose.
The Red Sox announced they had designated Alcala for assignment prior to Tuesday’s game, calling up right-hander Isaiah Campbell from Triple-A to fill his spot in the bullpen. Alcala will now be made available to other teams, though if he goes unclaimed he could potentially remain in the organization.
Since being acquired from the Minnesota Twins on June 12 in exchange for minor league infielder Andy Lugo, Alcala has posted a 3.31 ERA in 19 appearances with the Red Sox. He was initially effective, allowing just one earned run in his first 14 appearances with the club, but he has since regressed significantly.
Over his last five outings Alcala has allowed five earned runs in 3.1 innings, allowing eight hits, four walks and four home runs during that stretch. His meltdown on Monday eventually led to both Garrett Whitlock and Aroldis Chapman entering a game in which the Red Sox at one point held a seven-run lead.
Campbell has appeared in only one big league game so far this season, allowing two runs in a two-inning appearance, and in Triple-A he’s posted a 4.17 ERA with 41 strikeouts over 45.1 innings.
