Gone are Merrill Kelly, Corbin Burnes, and even Jordan Montgomery (who did not make it to opening day). And my view is that Anthony DeSclafani and Bryce Jarvis are relievers, not starters. Who will replace the lost starters?
Which Diamondbacks could start next season in the rotation?
Here are three solid starting pitchers:
It would be great if Corbin Burnes could be available late in the season assuming a timely rehab from Tommy John surgery. However, the Diamondbacks need starters to fill his spot until he returns.
Here are three strong candidates:
The following table compares them on a few metrics in the minor leagues. Each pitcher has a strength highlighted with green text.
There are other possible candidates for the rotation. They are younger, with less experience, and there is greater uncertainty in their performance.
A contending team should plan on using at least 7 starters. Beyond the top three spots, it’s uncertain who the others will be. If the Diamondbacks plan on contending in 2026, my view is that in the offseason they need to acquire another pitcher for the rotation.
Which potential free agent would be a good acquisition?
I looked for the following:
The following graph compares the pitchers on two measures: quality start percentage and ERA+. Although the graph only shows two of the criteria, the four best candidates (based on all four criteria) are in green font.
The following table shows more data comparing potential free agents.
Perhaps Merrill Kelly would be the best choice of the four candidates. Not only is he a known candidate, but he is open to returning.
“I still want be here. If I don’t get traded, I’m definitely not gonna be mad about it. But if I do, yeah, there’s always a possibility that I would come back here.” — Merrill Kelly
Next Season, the Diamondbacks need to acquire an additional pitcher for the rotation. Four worthy candidates:
Perhaps Merrill Kelly would be the best choice of the four candidates.
