With the 2024 draft signing deadline behind us, below are the top 100 signing bonuses of the 2024 class.
MLB’s draft bonus pool system means that many highly ranked players will be selected with lower picks but wind up being paid commensurate with their talent—via overslot deals. The same is also true in the opposite direction as some players will agree to underslot deals at higher picks for less money.
The top-ranked hitter and top-ranked pitcher in the 2024 class lead all players in signing bonus value, as Charlie Condon and Chase Burns signed for identical $9,250,000 deals. Those bonuses set the new all-time high for an amateur signing bonus, clearing the $9,200,000 deal that Paul Skenes signed with the Pirates as the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft.
The Guardians, A’s, Angels and D-backs each signed five players for top-100 bonuses in this year’s draft—the most of any organization. The clubs ranked 1st, 4th, 9th and 11th, respectively, in total bonus pool value. The Cardinals were at the opposite end of the spectrum with just one top-100 bonus handed out after picking seventh and then not again until the 80th selection. St. Louis had the 17th-largest bonus pool of all clubs.
Among top-100 bonuses, 57 were handed out to players from four-year universities compared to 43 bonuses from high schools. No junior college player cracked the top-100. College players from this list totaled $170,384,450 in total signing bonus value while high school players totaled $102,288,225. In contrast to the 2023 draft, where high school players inside the top-100 signing bonuses at least had a larger average bonus, the 2024 class saw college players among the top-100 average a $2,989,201 bonus compared to a high school average of $2,378,796.
Among states Texas and California tied for 11 players who signed for top-100 bonuses, followed by Florida and North Carolina tied with nine each. Tennessee rounded out the top five with seven players who signed for top-100 bonuses.
Among schools, Tennessee led all programs with five players who received top-100 bonuses, followed by Wake Forest and LSU with four, and Virginia and Mississippi State with three. Programs with two top-100 bonuses include California, Florida State, Kentucky, Oregon State, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt.
