At Chase Field: DeSclafani moved into the rotation last week following the trade of RHP Merrill Kelly to the Texas Rangers and struggled in his first start, giving up four runs in 2 1/3 innings with three walks and one strikeout against the Athletics. … He gave up four runs in four innings in his other start this season. He has a 2.79 ERA in 19 1/3 innings over seven relief appearances. … Having spent 2021-23 with the Giants, he has faced the Padres extensively in his career. In 11 games (10 starts) he has a 2.88 ERA in 59 1/3 innings. … This will be Cortes’ first start with the Padres after he was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers just before the trade deadline on July 31. … He has made only two starts this year. He was rocked in the second game of the season, giving up eight runs in two-plus innings, then fired six scoreless innings in his second outing. … He has been working his way back from a flexor strain, building his pitch count up to 93 during a rehab start on July 24 in Triple-A Nashville.
