Triple-A: Norfolk Tides 8, Rochester Red Wings (Nationals) 2
Another Tides game, another impressive showing from Samuel Basallo and Dylan Beavers. Basallo hit a three-run homer and walked. Beavers double, walked, and drove in a pair of runs. A rehabbing Ryan Mountcastle kept on crushing the opposition, going 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored, and two RBI. Carter Young added two singles, and Livan Soto reached based three times, including two walks.
The Norfolk pitching put forth a solid team effort. Kyle Brnovich tossed 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on six hits, a walk, and eight strikeouts. Houston Roth worked 1.1 perfect innings of relief, and then Ryan Long, José Espada, and Vinny Nittoli combined for three shutout innings to wrap up the win.
Double-A: Akron RubberDucks (Guardians) 8, Chesapeake Baysox 2
The recently promoted Austin Overn led the Chesapeake offense with two hits, a walk, and a stolen base out of the leadoff spot. Brandon Butterworth added a double, a walk, and an RBI. Cole Urman also doubled, singled, and scored twice. Doug Hodo went 1-for-4 with a single. But overall, it was a struggle for the Chesapeake lineup. They went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
Things weren’t much better on the pitchers’ mound. Zach Fruit took the loss. Over 3.2 innings he gave up six runs on six hits, three walks, and four strikeouts. Tyson Neighbors—acquired in the Ryan O’Hearn/Ramón Laureano trade—made his organizational debut and tossed 1.1 scoreless innings. Micah Ashman—acquired in the Charlie Morton swap—struggled a bit, giving up two runs in 1.1 innings. Gerald Ogando pitched 1.2 scoreless innings to close the box score on the Baysox.
High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 7, Wilmington Blue Rocks (Nationals) 3
Vance Honeycutt led the offense with two hits, his 11th double of the season and fourth home run. The first-round pick from a season ago has to be hoping he can finish the season on a hot streak. Thomas Sosa also had two hits, including his fourth homer of the year. Ethan Anderson and Jake Cunningham collected two hits apiece. Elis Cuevas singled, walked, stole a base, and scored twice.
Wellington Aracena was back on the mound, his second appearance with the organization since coming over in the Gregory Soto deal and his debut at High-A Aberdeen. Once again, he was good! Over four innings he did not allow any hits, but did give up one run on three walks and six strikeouts. Ryan Cabarcas and Rodolfo Martinez tossed one scoreless inning each. Jack Crowder got the three-inning save, allowing two runs on two hits, two walks, and two strikeouts in the process.
Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 5, Fayetteville Woodpeckers (Astros) 1
Boston Bateman, the centerpiece of the Ryan O’Hearn/Ramón Laureano trade, made his organizational debut. He fared well, allowing just one run on five hits and no walks over three innings, but struck out just one. Kenny Leiner worked 1.1 scoreless innings of middle relief. And then Brandon Downer put forth an impressive performance to earn the win. Over 4.2 scoreless innings he gave up just one hit, no walks, and eight strikeouts.
The Shorebirds offense had a weird game. They managed just four hits, but walked five times, and benefitted from four Fayetteville errors. Luis Almeyda had the only extra-base hit, a triple, drove in two runs and scored twice. Nate George went 1-for-2 with two walks, a stolen base, two runs, and two walks. Raylin Ramos singled and stole a base. Cobb Hightower was 0-for-4 with a strikeout as the leadoff hitter.
