Pitcher Andrew Hoffman talks about being traded to Arizona Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks acquired Andrew Hoffman from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for outfielder Randal Grichuk just before the 2025 trade deadline.
Catcher Gabriel Moreno, first baseman Pavin Smith and infielder Ildemaro Vargas are set to begin rehab assignments with Triple-A Reno on Aug. 12, manager Torey Lovullo said.
Lovullo said none of the three are likely to return during the club’s upcoming road trip to Texas and Colorado, but could be back during the homestand that follows.
“I wouldn’t say everybody on one day, but we could sprinkle it in there around the same time,” Lovullo said.
All three have been active participants in various game settings at Salt River Fields and in complex games in recent days.
Moreno has been out since June 14 with a fractured right index finger, Smith since July 5 with an oblique strain and Vargas since June 24 with a broken bone in his right foot.

At Chase Field: Pfaadt had a solid bounceback outing his last time out, giving up two runs in 5⅔ innings against the Padres. He had allowed seven runs in 4⅔ innings in Detroit the time before that. … Pfaadt allowed four runs in five innings in his lone start against the Rockies this season, an outing at Coors Field on June 22. … Opponents are hitting just .146 on his cutter, a pitch he began throwing on June 17. He has a 4.35 ERA in nine starts in that time, with 10 walks and 47 strikeouts in 51⅔ innings. … Gordon has been hammered in his past two starts, giving up a combined 13 earned runs in 5⅔ innings. … He started against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field last year and did not escape the first inning, giving up four runs (three earned) while recording only two outs.
