As has seemingly been the case all season for Jack Kochanowicz, consistency proved elusive once again. His struggles threw the Angels into an uphill battle early as they ultimately fell 9-5 to the Detroit Tigers on Sunday, dropping two of three at Comerica Park.
Fresh off a start in which he worked six innings for the first time since May, Kochanowicz managed only half of that as he tried his luck against a gritty Tigers lineup. En route to extending their comfortable lead in the AL Central, Detroit tagged the right-hander for seven runs total as he fell to 3-10.
Kochanowicz managed to retire the first two batters he saw before a Kerry Carpenter double and Riley Greene single quickly put Detroit out in front early. Two batters later, Zach McKinstry punched an RBI single of his own through the left side to double the lead.
The biggest blows of the day came in the fourth, where an error and a single put runners on the corners to open the frame for Detroit. Gleyber Torres’ single to right extended the lead to 4-0 before Carpetner blasted a three-run shot to right, making it 7-0 and ending Kochanowicz’s day.
After showing flashes in 2024, working to a sub-4 ERA through 11 starts, Kochanowicz has not seen the continued progression in 2025 that was expected. He now has just four quality starts in 22 chances this season, having pitched to an ERA below five in only the month of May.
With his last victory coming on May 16, the second-year man can only hope to see improved results down the stretch as the Angels continue to fade further and further out of the postseason picture.
At the very least, the lineup continued to boast the same power it had for the opening two games of the series, launching home runs five and six of the three-game set in a losing effort. Nolan Schanuel’s two-run shot in the fifth got Los Angeles on the board to make it 7-2, while Luis Rengifo tagged a two-run homer of his own in the eighth that made it 9-5.

After early-season struggles limited Rengifo to a slow start, he has since found a nice groove to regain some confidence at the dish. Over his last 49 games, the 28-year-old is hitting .303 with 6 home runs, 17 RBI and an .824 OPS. He has now hit home runs on consecutive days, and a 2-4 showing on Sunday capped off a 5-12 series overall.
On the mound, Carson Fulmer did a promising job in relief to give the Angels some much-needed bullpen length. The right-hander finished the final five frames of the contest, allowing just one hit and striking out three.
Fulmer, since making his season debut in July, has pitched to a 3.18 ERA in 22 2/3 innings total.
The Angels will head home after a quick 1-2 road trip as they host the Dodgers in the newest addition of the Freeway Series starting on Monday night. José Soriano (7-9, 4.01 ERA) will take the mound against right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto (10-7, 2.51 ERA).
First pitch is scheduled for 6:38 p.m. PT.
