Season series: Angels lead 4-0

The Angels did it again Monday night. While the Halos are 5 games under .500 on the season, they improved to a perfect 4-0 against the Dodgers after a 7-4 victory as moderate underdogs (+144) with the Over (8.5) connecting in the series opener.

The Angels fired out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, scored 4 in the fifth and added 1 in the sixth for a 7-0 advantage before the Dodgers crossed the plate 4 times in the top of the eighth to make the score look closer than it actually was. Angels SS Zach Neto started the scoring with a leadoff solo homer in the first and added another solo shot in the sixth for the Angels’ final run. He finished 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs. 3B Yoan Moncada ended up 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, and DH Mike Trout finished 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

DH Shohei Ohtani (1-for-3) put the Dodgers on the board with an eighth-inning solo shot, his 42nd HR of the season. Four batters later, 3B Max Muncy (1-for-3) ripped a 3-run homer to get LA within 7-4. SS-RF Mookie Betts and C Will Smith each finished 2-for-4 with a run as the Dodgers’ only multi-hit performers.

The Dodgers have dropped 2 in a row and they are 4-5 in their last 9 road games. Since July 4, they are 12-19 as their lead in the NL West drop to 1 game over the second-place San Diego Padres — LA had a 9-game lead back on July 3. On the road, the Dodgers have lost 5 of their past 9 games.

As far as the Angels are concerned, they’re playing .500 ball across the past 8 games, going 4-4, while the Over is 6-1-1 in that span,. The Over is 4-0 in their past 4 outings and 10-2-1 clip across the previous 13 contests.

Dodgers 7, Angels 5

The Dodgers (-175) can’t be trusted, costing nearly 1.75 times the potential return. For whatever reason, the Angels (+145) have owned their Freeway Series rivals from L.A., winning all 4 meetings so far.

It’s inexplicable how the Halos have owned Dodger Blue, but you can’t risk this much, especially on the road.

AVOID and look to the run line instead.

OK, sure I typed the Dodgers can’t be trusted, but if you’re adventurous, rolling with DODGERS -1.5 (-110) isn’t terrible since it’s a much nicer price. It takes a bit of a leap of faith as they are 0-4 vs. the Angels this season and 0-5 in the last 5 meetings going back to last September.

However, Sheehan is a little more established than Mederos, who, as mentioned, will be making his first-career MLB start. The Angels are projected to start the right-hander as an opener before turning it over to the bullpen. The Angels’ relief corps ranks 27th in the majors with a 4.86 ERA, while allowing the most homers in the big leagues with 71.

This could be — “should be” the first game the Dodgers break through against their SoCal rivals.

OVER 9.5 (-110) is the lean, but don’t get carried away.

The Over is 2-0-1 in the Dodgers’ past 3 outings.

While the score prediction seems to indicate a higher-scoring game, strange things are afoot in this rivalry lately. What should happen and what is happening hasn’t followed common sense.

The Dodgers “should” win and they “should” pile up plenty of runs against Mederos in his first MLB start. But, they also “should not” be 0-4 against the Angels this season.
