WEST WARWICK – Next stop: Erie, Pennsylvania.
Hard work continues to pay off for Andrew Sears, the left-handed pitcher from West Warwick who was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 10th round of the 2023 MLB Amateur Draft.
The 2020 WWHS graduate, who played first at Rhode Island College before transferring to UConn, has been fully immersed in the daily grind of Minor League Baseball (MiLB) ever since, a journey that has taken him from Florida to Michigan and now, Pennsylvania.
Last Sunday marked the latest step for Sears in achieving his lifelong dream of one day making it to the majors.
Nick Green, the pitching coach of the West Michigan Whitecaps, Detroit’s High-A affiliate where Sears has spent the 2025 season, approached the southpaw in the clubhouse at the conclusion of the team’s 7-5 victory over Dayton.
“He kind of called me over to the manager’s office,” said Sears, recapping the moment he found out he was being promoted, noting that he was initially uncertain about the nature of the meeting.
