In an eventful ninth inning in Texas, Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo was ejected for arguing a series of missed calls, and four pitches later, Ketel Marte hit the go-ahead home run to beat the Rangers, 3-2.

Juan Morillo earned his first career save after Marte made a diving play to rob Josh Jung of a single up the middle.

The Diamondbacks evened the series after an extra-inning loss on Monday, setting up a pitching matchup of Zac Gallen against Merrill Kelly on Wednesday with a series win on the line.

Torey Lovullo ejected

Home plate umpire Nate Tomlinson rang up three Diamondbacks on pitches outside the strike zone within a span of five hitters late in a tied ballgame.

After Geraldo Perdomo was called out on strikes on a pitch below the zone to lead off the ninth, Lovullo came out of the dugout knowing he’d get the hook. Bench coach Jeff Banister took over as acting manager.

The dugout was particularly animated in the seventh inning, as Adrian Del Castillo was called out on a pitch that was well low to end the inning and strand two runners. Tyler Locklear was visibly agitated on a 3-2 pitch just off the outside corner that was called strike three in the eighth inning, and the Perdomo call was the final straw for Lovullo.

Lovullo has been ejected three times this season and 23 times during his tenure as Arizona’s skipper.

Ketel Marte’s clutch home run

Marte came up to bat after Perdomo, and he crushed a 1-2 sweeper 445 feet off Rangers lefty Danny Coulombe. The All-Star has hit three ninth-inning home runs this year after leading MLB with nine in 2024.

It was Marte’s 22nd home run of the season, and he finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Diamondbacks needed a jolt after a night of struggling with runners on base (1-for-11 with runners in scoring position). Blaze Alexander hit a solo shot in the third inning and Marte beat out an infield single to score a run in the seventh inning.

The D-backs have homered in 10 straight games, hitting 18 in that span.

Arizona (58-62) received a critical performance from the bullpen after starter Anthony DeSclafani was pulled after three innings and two earned runs.

Jake Woodford (3.1 IP), Jalen Beeks (1.2 IP) and Morillo (1 IP) shut out the Rangers (61-60) for six frames with only one hit allowed, and Texas finished the game with four total knocks. Morillo made his first appearance since getting recalled from Triple-A Reno on Monday.

Rangers starting pitcher Jack Leiter threw five innings with one earned run.

Diamondbacks tweak starting lineup

The Diamondbacks elected to alter their starting lineup by flipping Perdomo and Corbin Carroll. Perdomo moved up to the lead-off spot, while Carroll dropped to third.

Perdomo is among the league leaders in on-base percentage (.384) and walk rate (13.3%), while Carroll has been one of the game’s top power hitters with 26 home runs and a .554 slugging percentage (sixth in MLB).

Carroll had a quiet night at 0-for-5, while Perdomo went 1-for-4 with a double.

Perdomo has a nine-game hitting streak going and has reached base safely in 13 straight games.

Up next for Diamondbacks

The rubber match on Wednesday begins at 11:35 a.m. MST. Longtime teammates Gallen and Kelly are matched up against each other for the first time, as the D-backs traded Kelly at the deadline less than two weeks ago for three prospects.
