The Minnesota Twins won’t be sold after all.

In a stunning announcement released Wednesday, the Pohlad family confirmed it will remain the principal owners of the MLB team, reversing course after months of exploring sale options.

The family purchased the team in 1984 for $44 million. Sportico values the club at $1.7 billion.

“This franchise has become part of our family story, as it has for our employees, our players, this community, and Twins fans everywhere,” Twins Executive Chair Joe Pohlad said in a statement.

“Over the past several months, we explored a wide range of potential investment and ownership opportunities. Our focus throughout has been on what’s best for the long-term future of the Twins. We have been fully open to all possibilities.

“After a detailed and robust process, our family will remain the principal owner of the Minnesota Twins.”

The statement said the Twins will be adding “two significant limited partnership groups” to

strengthen the club in a rapidly evolving sports landscape. Details about the new investors will be kept private until Major League Baseball approves of the transactions, Pohlad said.

Many fans on social media didn’t react positively to the news that a sale had been called off. The Twins made the playoffs as recently as 2023, winning their first playoff series in 19 years, but collapsed down the stretch to miss the postseason last year.

This year, they are on track for their lowest attendance total in 16 seasons at Target Field and the roster was torn apart at the trade deadline with several key players, including a star closer, on the move.

“We see and hear the passion from our partners, the community, and Twins fans. That passion inspires us. This ownership group is committed to building a winning team and culture for this region, one that Twins fans are proud to cheer for,” Pohlad’s statement concludes.

The Twins haven’t won the World Series since 1991.
