The Arizona Diamondbacks placed right-handed pitcher Anthony DeSclafani on the 15-day injured list with right thumb inflammation on Wednesday.

Right-hander Casey Kelly was called up from Triple-A Reno to fill DeSclafani’s roster spot.

DeSclafani pitched 3.0 innings on Tuesday against the Texas Rangers, giving up two earned runs on three hits and two walks across 52 pitches.

He has been starting games in Merrill Kelly’s spot in the rotation since the longtime Diamondback pitcher was traded to the Rangers at the MLB trade deadline.

Over the three starts, DeSclafani has given up six earned runs on 11 hits over 9.2 innings.

Casey Kelly made his first Diamondbacks appearance on Aug. 6 after Kevin Ginkel was placed on the 60-day IL to end his season.

In 1.2 innings of relief, Casey Kelly has given up no runs on one hit and one walk across 24 pitches (two appearances). He appeared in 26 major-league games from 2012-18, but spent the following five seasons in the KBO.

He pitched in two games for the Cincinnati Reds in 2024, but has spent the majority of the last two seasons in Triple-A. In 85 innings across 18 games (14 starts) with Reno this season, he has a 5.82 ERA with 42 strikeouts to 33 walks.

Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly square off in a matchup of longtime teammates beginning at 11:45 a.m. on 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app.
