ATLANTA – The Phillies took a pair of college pitchers with their first two selections in the 2025 MLB Draft.
First up with the 26th overall pick, was right-hander Gage Wood out of Arkansas who opened eyes when he threw a 19-strikeout no-hitter against Murray State in the College World Series. One of the hardest throwers in the draft, Wood sits at 94-96 and touches 98 with his fastball.
Philadelphia went with left-hander Cade Obermueller out of Iowa in the second round at No. 63. The 22-year-old, whose father Wes pitcher for the Royals, Brewers and Marlins in the early 2000s, was a 19th round choice of the Rangers in 2024 but returned to the Hawkeyes for another season.
With their final pick of the first day, the Phillies chose Vanderbilt right-handed pitcher Cody Bowker with the 100th overall pick late in the first round. Bowker pitched two seasons for Georgetown before joining the Commodores for the 2024-25 season.Â
