The New York Mets and New York Yankees will meet at Yankee Stadium for a Subway Series starting on Friday night, and both teams are off to hot starts this season. The Mets are 27-15 and 2.5 games ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies for first place in the NL East, while the Yankees are 24-17 and three games ahead of the Boston Red Sox for first place in the AL East.
However, the Yankees won’t be the same team on Friday as they were on Monday morning. That’s because third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera sustained a left ankle fracture while sliding home during their 11-5 win over the Seattle Mariners on Monday.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, who coached the 26-year-old with the Yankees in 2022 and ’23, sent his regards on Tuesday, via SNY.

“Devastated. You hate to see it [happen] to anybody in the game, but when you know the guy and the type of person he is, and how much he means to the ballclub, and just to the baseball family,” he said. “We’re a family at the end of the day. We’re competing against each other, but we’re a family.”
“I got to meet him when he first signed out of Venezuela, and then watching him go down like that is hard. Wishing him a speedy recovery…I know he’ll be back,” he continued. “This is a guy that all his life, he had to fight. I know he’ll be fighting and he’ll be back on the field.”
The Yankees placed Cabrera on the 10-day IL on Tuesday and reinstated fellow infielder DJ LeMahieu from the 10-day IL, via the team’s social media.
