CLEVELAND, Ohio (WNEM) – Jakob Marsee, a former CMU Chippewa, has tied the Miami Marlins single game RBI record with 7 RBIs in a game yesterday against the Cleveland Guardians.
Marsee started his day in the first inning with a 3-run home run off Gavin Williams giving the Marlins a 4-0 lead. Marsee’s second career home run went 403 feet and came off the bat at 105.4 mph.
Marsee didn’t stop there, he added to his RBI total with another home run, this time a 2-run home run in the 5th that gave the Marlins a 6-4 lead.
Marsee would go on to have a 2 RBI double in the 6th to give the Marlins an 11-4 lead and his 7th RBI, which tied Adam Duvall (April 13, 2021) for the most RBIs in a single game in Marlins history.
“I pictured myself in a lot of these moments and I dreamed a lot about these things,” Marsee told CBS Sports, who also had career-high four hits. “All those (statistics) are pretty cool. Obviously, it’s an honor and super special to do it. But the win, honestly, means more to me.”
The 24-year-old outfielder had this historic performance in front of his friends and family who live roughly 164 miles away from Cleveland in Dearborn, Michigan.
“There’s a lot of people here and their support means everything,” Marsee said in an interview with CBS Sports. “It’s awesome. Anytime I have them around, it’s a little comforting. It’s been a long journey, so (I pointed to them) because having them here means everything.”
With yesterday’s performance Marsee became only the third player since 1920 to have a seven-RBI performance in his first 13 appearances, he joins J.R. Towles of the 2007 Houston Astros and Hunter Renfroe of the 2016 San Diego Padres.
He is only the fifth Major Leaguer since 1995 to have an average of at least .400, an on-base percentage of at least .500, and a slugging percentage of at least .800 in a 13-game span to start their career.
Marsee was acquired by the Marlins on May 4, 2024, when they dealt defending NL batting champion Luis Arraez to the Padres in exchange for Marsee and three other minor leaguers. Marsee was drafted by the Padres in the 6th round of the 2022 draft out of CMU where he spent 2 seasons in the maroon and gold.
