Red Sox reliever Nick Burdi is remaining with the organization just a few days after being designated for assignment.

Burdi, who was designated Monday when the Red Sox promoted left-handed Jovani Morán to the major league roster, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Worcester. He had the option to reject the assignment and elect free agency but chose to accept and remain with the WooSox.

The move preserves some relief depth for the Red Sox, though Burdi is no longer on the 40-man roster. Boston has Brennan Bernardino, Zack Kelly and Chris Murphy at Worcester as 40-man relief options as well as Burdi, Alex Hoppe, Bryan Mata and recently promoted David Sandlin in the mix.

The 32-year-old Burdi, who joined the Red Sox on a minor league contract in spring training, appeared in four games for the Red Sox in May and June, tossing 5 â…“ scoreless innings before hitting the injured list with a right foot contusion. He was recently activated and returned to Triple-A Worcester, where he owns a dominant 1.88 ERA, four saves and 12.0 K/9 rate in 24 innings this year.

Burdi has made 35 career MLB appearances with the Pirates, Cubs, Yankees and Red Sox and has a 5.34 ERA in 30 â…“ innings.
