As the season has unraveled for the San Francisco Giants, their announcers have lost both the ability and desire to put a positive spin on things as they go south for the team. Such was the case in Wednesday’s game against the San Diego Padres, an 11-1 drubbing.

The Padres opened things up in the second inning. With two outs and the score already 5-0, Manny Machado ripped a one-hop double off the left field wall. San Francisco’s Heliot Ramos got to the ball quickly, which seemingly froze Fernando Tatís Jr. at third base. But Ramos’ throw into the infield was spiked and rolled behind second base. As Dave Flemming noted on KNBR, Ramos threw “to nobody.” Willy Adames raced out to pick the ball up. But by the time he got there, Tatis had scored.

“He throws to nobody!!! The Giants… it’s just unraveling, man. Ugly.”

“The Giants, it’s just unraveling,” Flemming said. “Man. Ugly.”

Mike Krukow was similarly dismayed on the television side.

“That’s unbelievable,” he said.

After the game, manager Bob Melvin defended Ramos, noting that he was trying to throw to second base but realized at the last second that nobody was there. And while that might take Ramos off the hook (at least to a degree), it still speaks to a problem on the field.

Wednesday’s loss to the Padres was San Francisco’s fifth straight, with all losses coming at home. Since the All-Star Break, the Giants are 1-11 at home and 7-17 overall. It’s a stretch that has taken them completely out of any realistic postseason race.

Following Wednesday’s game, Krukow noted the frustration that the home crowds are feeling towards the team, adding that it’s justified.

“Thirty-five thousand-plus today here witnessed this, and we heard some boos today,” Krukow said, per Alex Simon, SF Gate. “And quite honestly, the Giants deserved them.”

If there’s any consolation for the Giants and their fans, the sweep by the Padres, coupled with the Los Angeles Dodgers losing four straight, moved the Dodgers out of first place in the NL West, with the Padres taking a one-game lead.
