The Big Pod Machine: Reds vs. St. Louis Cardinals

Reds Beat Reporter Gordon Wittenmyer and Sports Reporter Pat Brennan discuss the current state of the Cincinnati Reds.

Cincinnati Reds pitching prospect Luis Mey was promoted Thursday to the big-league Reds from Triple-A Louisville. The move was first reported late Wednesday by Hector Gomez, a reporter based in the Dominican Republic.

Wearing No. 62 with the Reds, Mey made his Major League Baseball debut during Thursday’s series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals. Mey struck out Nolan Gorman, the first batter he faced. Alec Burleson flied out, and Luken Baker popped out.

“A perfect debut for Mey!” Fanduel Sports Network’s John Sadak said.

Mey continued a streak by the Reds’ bullpen, of 35 consecutive batters retired over two games, the longest streak by the Reds since 1940.

“His pitches have been described as 100 mile-an-hour bowling ball,” Fanduel Sports Network analyst and former Reds great Barry Larkin said.

From the Reds via Twitter/X:

Mey, a 23-year-old right-hander from the Dominican Republic, has posted a 4.00 ERA in 10 appearances this season for the Triple-A Louisville Bats, with 10 strikeouts and seven walks in nine innings.

Mey is on the Reds’ 40-man MLB roster. The Reds signed the 6-foot-5 pitcher as an international free agent in 2018.

Mey ranks 20th among MLB Pipeline’s top Reds prospects.

Luis Mey made Dayton Dragons’ history last April with a 103 mile-per-hour pitch.

The Dayton Dragons, the Reds’ High-A affiliate, tweeted last April that Mey made team history by throwing a pitch 103 miles per hour against the Fort Wayne TinCaps.

Mey also hit 103 MPH for the Bats earlier in April.

Mey pitched for the Low-A Daytona Tortugas from 2021 to 2023. In 2022, Mey had a pitch clocked at 101.3 mph.

Control has been an issue in the minors. In 2022, Mey posted a 5.65 ERA with 32 walks and 58 strikeouts in 43 innings. In 2023, he posted a 5.40 ERA with 16 walks and 18 strikeouts in 16 2/3 innings.
