DENVER — Through six innings at Coors Field Friday, Aug. 15, the Diamondbacks trail the Colorado Rockies 4-3.

Arizona wasn’t able to get too much going against Rockies starting pitcher Tanner Gordon, whom the Diamondbacks jumped on for 10 earned runs when they faced him last week. But Gordon was removed in the top of the sixth when the first two Diamondbacks reached base.

Right-hander Brandon Pfaadt has allowed eight hits through five innings, including a home run to Hunter Goodman in the bottom of the first.

The Rockies led 2-0 after three innings, but the Diamondbacks rallied to tie in the top of the fourth. With one out, Corbin Carroll singled and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. doubled. Jake McCarthy’s infield hit scored Carroll, and Tyler Locklear’s groundout brought home Gurriel Jr.

Pfaadt had a chance to strand a runner, Tyler Freeman, at third base in the bottom of the fifth after a leadoff triple. He got two outs, but Jordan Beck hit a bloop double in front of center fielder Alek Thomas to drive in Freeman.

Thomas broke back on the ball off the bat and couldn’t recover in time to make a catch.

Down 4-2, the Diamondbacks had runners at first and third in the sixth. Jake McCarthy drove in Ketel Marte with a single, but Gurriel was thrown out at third base.

Pfaadt worked six innings, allowing four runs, eight hits while walking two and striking out three.

Lovullo focuses on games, not opinions on Marte

An Arizona Republic article about how Diamondbacks star Ketel Marte taking untimely days off for rest didn’t sit well with at least a few teammates and members of the organization led to some questions about Marte for manager Torey Lovullo prior to the team’s game against the Colorado Rockies on Friday, Aug. 15.

Lovullo said the matter is probably not worth addressing the team about.

“I take the temperature of that a lot. I spend a lot of time managing up, managing down, and it is what it is,” Lovullo said. “It’s somebody’s opinion as to what’s going on. I don’t think there’s a lot of facts. There’s nothing to it that’s deeper than an opinion. If it gets to a different level, I’ll get a good feel for that, and I could perhaps (talk to the team). But for right now, I just want to go out and win a baseball game.”

Lovullo said Marte is on a specific schedule in preparation to play every day. Lovullo talks often with the medical staff about Marte and checks in with him about how he feels, which is what will be considered in determining which day off Marte will get this weekend, be it Saturday, Aug. 16, or the following day.

Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno, still on the 60-day injured list after suffering a broken hand while catching in Cincinnati more than two months ago, went 0-for-3 on Thursday, Aug. 14, in a Triple-A rehab game for Reno. He also caught five innings.

Manager Torey Lovullo said he was told Moreno felt good.

“He was engaged in the pregame operation the way we want him to, talking about game planning. Went out and caught a good game,” Lovullo said.

Pavin Smith and Ildemaro Vargas (10-day injured list) are scheduled to play for the Aces at home on Friday, Aug. 15, with Moreno penciled in as the DH.
