BOSTON — Trevor Story had a Friday night to remember at Fenway, serving as the finisher in a walk-off Red Sox win and setting a franchise record along the way.

Story, with his team-leading 76th RBI, gave Boston a 2-1 win with a walk-off single through the right side with the bases loaded against Marlins reliever Calvin Faucher. Innings earlier, he etched his name in the record books with a sixth-inning steal that represented his 21st consecutive stolen base attempt to start the season. At 21-for-21, Story set a new Red Sox mark for most consecutive stolen base attempts without being thrown out.

He didn’t have much time to run the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning when he took the second pitch Faucher threw and plated Roman Anthony from third with a chopper that got through the infield, playing in. It was Boston’s 10th walk-off win of the year.

“The approach today was great,” said manager Alex Cora. “Bases loaded, didn’t try to do too much. Put the ball in play and good things happen.

Story, who entered the year with 29 steals under his belt in three injury-plagued seasons with the Red Sox, set a pre-season goal to eclipse his career high of 27 swiped bags, set back in 2018. In that season, with the Rockies, he was efficient as well, going 27-for-33. This year’s perfect run — aided by bigger bases that were installed in 2023 to help the run game — has helped spur countless Red Sox rallies. The previous record-holder was Julio Lugo, who started 2007 with 20 consecutive successful steal attempts.

“It’s the game within the game,” said Story. “I pride myself on trying to be safe. When I came up (with Colorado), Nolan (Arenado) and CarGo (Carlos Gonzalez) were hitting behind me and if I got thrown out, I was gonna hear from them.

“It’s a big pride thing for me. I should probably go more to take more chances, but I’m looking to be safe and let those guys drive me in.”

On Friday, Boston was dominated early by former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara before Story broke up the righty’s perfect game bid with a leadoff single in the fifth. Down 1-0 in the sixth, the Sox tied things up when Anthony walked then scored from first on an Alex Bregman RBI double to the opposite field. By the time Aroldis Chapman threw an 11-pitch ninth inning, the Sox were smelling blood in the water with the top of their order coming up in front of a raucous Fenway crowd of 36,854.

Rookie lefty Josh Simpson clearly felt the pressure in a wild appearance. The Connecticut native walked Anthony on five pitches to start the rally Story finished. It was Anthony’s 34th walk in 54 games.

“The plate discipline is crazy for his age and also the maturity not trying to do too much in those situations is special,” said Bregman. “I feel like he’s already one of the best hitters in the big leagues, and he has the ability to be the best.”

Bregman then walked on five pitches and Jarren Duran, trying to move his teammates over by bunting, was hit by a Simpson curveball to load the bases. As Miami manager Clayton McCullough swapped out Simpson for Faucher, it felt like a matter of time before the Red Sox would be walk-off winners.

“Roman put together a really good at-bat,” Story said. “It seems like he always does. Then AB and Jarren, too. You can feel the momentum shift going into the bottom of the ninth and obviously we took care of business.”

Story took an outside sweeper to start his at-bat then smoked a cutter 105.8 mph for the win. It was his second walk-off of 2025.

“In those bigger situations, less is more,” he said. “You feel all the energy, you feel all the excitement of everything. It’s easy to get big in that situation. For me, just trying to shoot something like that and hit the ball hard. Keep the effort low.”

The win was Boston’s fifth walk-off victory in its new “Fenway Greens” uniforms and the club improved to 23-5 in its last 28 games at Fenway Park.

“Obviously, Fenway is the most historic ballpark and it feels very magical here,” said starter Lucas Giolito. “That’s how I’d describe it, putting on the Red Sox uniform and playing here. I think it’s just this energy we feed off of.”
