The Cincinnati Reds have announced that Will Benson will again be returning to the team’s roster. The move by the Reds was announced on Sunday.Benson had previously been sent to the Reds’ Triple-A affiliate, the Louisville Bats, on Aug. 3.It was the third stretch of time this season that Benson had spent with the Bats. In his place, Jake Fraley will be designated for assignment with the team after hyperextending his knee during the Reds’ game on Saturday. The move temporarily removes Fraley from the roster for a week and buys the Reds some time to decide on further action.Additionally, the Reds also simultaneously announced that right-handed pitcher Connor Phillips will be called up to the team’s roster from Louisville, while left-handed pitcher Joe La Sorsa will be sent to spend time with the Bats in his place.Benson typically plays as a left fielder, which is the same position most often played by Miguel Andujar, the Reds’ newest trade acquisition. Within the short time he has been part of the Reds, Andujar has already rocketed into becoming an extremely powerful offensive weapon for the team.Among other achievements, Andujar has provided a remedy for the Reds’ long-standing weakness of hitting against left-handed pitchers, putting up a very high .359 batting average at the plate over 13 game appearances. He has also recorded nine RBI’s and three home runs over that time. This includes a grand slam that was hit during the Reds’ 8-0 stomp over the Phillies on Wednesday. However, the acquisition of Andujar is also believed to have played a pivotal role in Benson’s move to the Bats, as Andujar made his debut with the Reds the day before Benson was sent to Louisville. Despite this, Fraley also plays as an outfielder, opening up an opportunity for Benson’s return. It remains yet to be seen what the Reds will further do with its outfield roster once Fraley’s designation period is over.
