The Los Angeles Dodgers designated Julian Fernandez for assignment earlier this week to make room for Buddy Kennedy on the roster. On Sunday, the Washington Nationals claimed the right-hander on waivers and he was optioned to Triple-A Rochester.

Fernandez made one appearance for the Dodgers this season, allowing two earned runs in two innings of work. The right-hander produced a 3.05 ERA across 41.1 innings pitched in 35 appearances at Triple-A Oklahoma City this season.

Fernandez joined the Dodgers on a minor league contract last offseason.

As for Kennedy, he will make his first for the Dodgers in Sunday’s series finale against the San Diego Padres. Kennedy will be the Dodgers’ starting third baseman as Max Muncy was placed on the injured list Friday.

The Dodgers seemingly acquired Kennedy to provide depth at the hot corner given Muncy’s extended absence down the stretch. The Dodgers claimed the infield off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays.

Kennedy, a right-handed hitter, has gone 1-for-12 (.083) with two walks and three strikeouts across six MLB games this season.
