Before the teams’ big three-game series in Los Angeles started Friday, the San Diego Padres had moved in front of the Dodgers and into first place in the National League West Division.
Three prodigious home runs later, the Dodgers had completed a three-game sweep of the Padres and were back in front, by two games as of press time Monday.
Mookie Betts blasted the last of the three Dodgers home runs in a 5-4 Dodgers win Sunday, a solo shot that traveled 394 feet to left center field in the eighth for the go-ahead run.
Alex Vesia (3-2) shut down the Padres in order in the top of the ninth to get the win. Vesia pitched a hitless 1.2 innings.
The Dodgers jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning with two home runs off Yu Darvish. Freddie Freeman hit a three-run homer to center field that traveled 422 feet, and Andy Pages hit a solo home run to left center that traveled 385 feet.
All three MLB teams were to open three-game series Monday. The Dodgers were to play at Colorado, the Padres were to host the San Francisco Giants and the Angels were to host the Cincinnati Reds.
