Ahead of Monday night’s series opener against the Atlanta Braves, the Chicago White Sox have optioned right-hander Sean Burke to Triple-A Charlotte, addressing ongoing struggles in their starting rotation with another roster shakeup.
Burke’s Struggles Lead to Demotion
Burke, 24, has labored through a challenging 2025 campaign in his first extended big-league stint. The right-hander posted a 4.28 ERA and 1.44 WHIP across 117.2 innings pitched, failing to complete five innings in four of his last five starts for the Sox. Command inconsistencies and a rising walk rate have kept the talented prospect from finding a groove.
While the White Sox still view Burke as a potential long-term piece for their rotation, the organization is sending him down to Charlotte in hopes that a less pressurized environment will let him refine his mechanics, regain confidence, and get back on track.
Martin Perez Slotted for Rotation Return
With Burke headed to the minors, veteran southpaw Martin Perez is expected to slide back into the White Sox rotation. Perez, who boasts years of MLB experience, offers Chicago a steadying presence as they embark on a challenging series against a potent Atlanta Braves lineup.
The move also opens the door for further rotation adjustments if needed, as the White Sox continue to search for reliable innings during a challenging season.

Eye on the Future
Despite the demotion, the club remains optimistic about Burke’s long-term outlook. The former second-round pick has flashed swing-and-miss stuff at times and is regarded as one of the higher-upside arms in Chicago’s system. The hope is that his stint in Charlotte will prove to be a developmental step rather than a setback.
With the White Sox on the outside of the playoff picture and focused on future building blocks, monitoring Burke’s progress in Triple-A will be key for fans and the front office alike.
