The Ramapo College community is mourning the death of a former baseball player who died in a car crash in North Carolina earlier this week.

Nicholas Danbrowney was known for his passion and dedication on and off the field. The 22-year-old Barnegat native did everything he could to uplift those around him.

“Nick was the biggest competitor I have ever coached. He showed up with a smile on his face everyday and brought joy to everyone around him. The legacy he left on our school and program will last forever and he will always be in our hearts,” said Ramapo College baseball coach Ryan Rinsky.

Danbrowney pitched for the Ramapo Roadrunners baseball team for all four years at the university. He is the all-time strikeout leader at Ramapo College with 225 strikeouts.

He was also known for being a great friend. Danbrowney always carried positive energy which he brought to everyone around him.

“Nick was truly one of a kind—comedic, outgoing, and endlessly entertaining. He had a way of making everyone laugh, lifting the mood in any room, and turning ordinary moments into memories we’ll never forget. His energy and spirit left an impact on everyone lucky enough to know him,” said Tyler Quinn, a friend who organized a GoFundMe for the Danbrowney family after the news of the tragic death. The fundraiser has raised over $32,000 as of Aug. 21.

Some of his college accolades include winning the NJAC Rookie of the Week and NJAC Pitcher of the week twice. He was named ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. III All-Region IV Second Team and D3baseball.com All- Region IV Third Team.

He led Ramapo College to winning the 2024 NJAC Tournament Championship where he struck out nine batters in 8.1 innings. Danbrowney was a strikeout machine, recording more than 50 strikeouts in each of his last three seasons with a career high 72 during his senior year.

After college, he went on to play for Bakersfield Train Robbers out of Bakersfield California, a professional baseball team for the independent PECOS League.

“Our Ramapo College community is devastated by the news of Nick’s passing. Nick will always be a member of the Roadrunner family. His passion in life was baseball and he will always be remembered as a leader on and off the field. He loved his teammates, while touching the lives of many of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff,” said Jan Koslowsky, the director of athletics, intramurals and recreation at Ramapo College. “I was fortunate to be able to see Nick pitch and play the sport he loved the last few years. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family as he will forever be missed.”

On Aug. 19, at around 12:25 a.m., Danbrowney was the front seat passenger of a vehicle that was traveling north on NC 12 North Harbor View in Corolla, said North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Rico L. Stephens.

The vehicle collided with an embankment, killing Danbrowney and the driver, Rosario Edgar, 65, of Marietta, Georgia. A third passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash.
