Rockies Report, Game 129:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Andrew McCutchen jumped on Antonio Senzatela in the first inning Friday night, delivering an RBI double that continued the Rockies starter’s poor first-inning form and set the Rox on course for a 9-0 shellacking at the hands of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the opener of a three-game series at PNC Park.

That was one of six doubles at the expense of Senzatela, who lasted just four innings, giving up five runs.

However, one run would have been enough as Colorado mustered just three hits. Only one Rockies batter — Orlando Arcia — reached third base; he led off the sixth with a triple but was eventually left stranded.

Rockies pitchers spent the final four innings flailing at the offerings of Bubba Chandler, the No. 7 overall prospect and the No. 1 pitching prospect according to MLB Pipeline. Chandler relieved Pirates starter Braxton Ashcraft in the sixth inning and pitched the balance of the game, holding Colorado to a pair of hits while striking out three and ishung a walk, although he did plunk catcher Braxon Fulford.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

The two runs Senzatela yielded on McCutchen’s RBI double sent his first-inning ERA further soaring to a calamitous 11.51. Two more RBI doubles — including McCutchen’s second of the night — in the second brought home three more runs; Senzatela’s second-inning ERA is now 7.83.

Senzatela escaped trouble in following two innings, even though the doubles parade continued. Henry Davis remained stranded after a one-out double to left field in the third inning; Tommy Pham’s double in the fourth inning didn’t amount to a run after he was caught stealing following a subsequent intentional walk to McCutchen.

All told, Senzatela allowed six doubles in four innings of work. He became the 10th pitcher in Rockies history — and the second this season — to allow six doubles in a single game. Germán Márquez did it at Miami on June 2.

Senzatela fell to 4-15. No other MLB pitcher has more than 13 losses.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: McCutchen’s second double of the night put the Pirates up 5-0.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 1.90 — Senzatela’s WHIP this season, the worst for any of the 379 MLB pitchers with at least 35 innings pitched this season.

WHAT’S NEXT: Kyle Freeland looks for his third win of the season on Saturday. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:40 p.m. MDT.
