Every single team in Major League Baseball still has a mathematical chance to win the World Series.

Except for the Colorado Rockies.

Colorado fell to 37-94 with Sunday’s 4-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates and is officially eliminated from postseason contention. It sits in last place in the National League West and a full 37.5 games behind the division-leading San Diego Padres.

Here is how the current playoff bracket that will not feature the Rockies looks after the latest development:

The Rockies were facing an uphill battle for Sunday’s contest considering Paul Skenes was on the mound, and they struggled throughout the game against the Pirates’ ace.

He struck out seven and allowed just three hits in seven innings of work in yet another brilliant individual performance.

It was a fourth straight loss for the Rockies as the Pirates completed the three-game sweep. It also marked a return to form for the team after it had been playing much better of late than the majority of the season with a series win over the St. Louis Cardinals and Arizona Diamondbacks ahead of splitting a four-game set with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The recent run of solid play before the sweep at the hands of the Pirates means the Rockies are in a solid position to avoid historic futility.

The 2024 Chicago White Sox set the modern era record with 121 losses on the way to a 41-121 mark. Colorado needs five wins in its final 31 games to surpass last year’s record.

It didn’t always look like the Rockies would be able to avoid that record. After all, they didn’t earn their 10th win of the season until the 60th game on June 2 after a 9-50 start.

They fired manager Bud Black after a 7-33 start during that brutal beginning of the year, but things haven’t gotten much better as the franchise’s playoff drought officially extended to seven years.
