Rockies Report, Game 131:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: All-Star Game starter Paul Skenes found the going much better against the Rockies at his home park than he did at Coors Field, tossing seven innings of three-hit ball as the Pittsburgh Pirates shut out Colorado 4-0 to complete a three-game sweep at PNC Park on Sunday.

The defeat officially eliminated the Rockies from the postseason — on August 24. They dropped to 37-94; if they lose their next six games, they will hit the 100-loss mark before September and before Labor Day.

Defeat No. 94 saw their offense mystified by Skenes, who didn’t allow a runner past second base while throwing 101 pitches in which he was rarely troubled. Isaac Mattson and Dennis Santana finished off the Rockies to complete the shutout, the second of the series dealt by the Pirates.

Only Brenton Doyle’s solo home run with two outs and two strikes in the top of the ninth inning Saturday kept the Rockies from being shut out for an entire series for the second time this season.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

McCade Brown got the Pirates 1-2-3 in his opening inning as a major-league pitcher, then inducted a 5-4-3 from Andrew McCutchen to escape a leadoff walk in the second inning. The third inning was a bit more troublesome, but after a pair of singles put him with runners on the corners, he got Nick Gonzales to ground out to first.

That left Brown at 46 pitches through three innings, well on pace to make it through five. Brown battled to strike out Jack Suwinski, leaving two out and two on before the mistake that decided the game — a flat slider to Jared Triolo that caught the middle of the strike zone and landed 412 feet away in the left-field stands.

It was Triolo’s second home run in as many days. He accounted for five RBI in the last two days; the Rockies have a single run in their last three games.

After another walk and a double to Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Brown’s day ended with a loss. Angel Chivilli and Jimmy Herget handled the rest of the game and delivered 4 1/3 innings of one-hit, one-walk shutout ball.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Triolo homered in the fourth inning, giving the Pirates a 3-0 lead.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Rockies get a day off before beginning a series in Houston on Tuesday night. Tanner Gordon starts the opener, which will begin at 6:10 p.m. MDT.
