Blue Jays named fit for Padres ace after Mason Miller trade originally appeared on The Sporting News
With the addition of Mason Miller and reports indicating that the San Diego Padres would like to make him a starter in the long term, there’s a good chance that the Padres will allow some of their top arms to walk.

That includes Dylan Cease, a right-hander who is set to hit the free agency market at the end of the campaign.
The 29-year-old hasn’t been great throughout the 2025 campaign, posting a 4.71 ERA, which would by far be the worst of his career outside of his rookie season.
Does Dylan Cease make sense for Blue Jays?
Mark Feinsand of MLB.com had some thoughts about his free agency, noting that his inconsistency at times could hurt him, but also linked him to the Toronto Blue Jays.
“Cease has struggled with consistency this season, posting a 5-11 record and 4.61 ERA in 25 starts. His velocity, whiff percentage and strikeout percentage all remain near the top of the league rankings, though walks and a lack of ground balls have hurt him at times. Cease remains one of the most durable starters in the game — he’s on track for his fifth straight season with at least 32 starts — and will surely draw interest from a number of pitching-needy clubs.

“Potential fits: Blue Jays, Giants, Orioles,” he wrote.

The Blue Jays will be in the mix to add another arm or two, as they’re looking to continue dominating the American League East after impressing throughout the 2025 season.
Cease could be interested in getting the most amount of money, and if the Blue Jays offer him that, there’s a good chance he could end up in Toronto. However, it might not be the cleanest fit if he wants to stay in the States.
