DENVER (KDVR) — The Colorado Rockies have been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention following the team’s loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday. The team would only reach 69 wins if they won every game for the rest of the season, with the threshold for a wildcard spot being at least 70 wins.
Making the playoffs was not on the radar for most Rockies fans, but the team’s recent results are showing promise for an improved season next year, after a stretch of games saw the Rockies bring in some much-needed tallies in the win column.

Here’s how Colorado ranks in a new list of the best US states to live in
Fans might want to be pragmatic in their wishful thinking, as the Rockies’ August turnaround still offers a mixed bag of results.
The highs of two series wins against the Arizona Diamondbacks and St. Louis Cardinals can be matched by the lows of a series defeat to the Toronto Blue Jays, which included losses of 1-15 and 1-20.
A small glimmer of hope manifested in the series drawn with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the reigning MLB champions, last week.
Two of the wins against the Dodgers have offered security for the Rockies, who are improving their chances of not finishing as the worst team in the modern era of the MLB. Out of the teams’ remaining 31 games, five wins are needed to edge ahead of the historic-worst 2024 Chicago White Sox, who won 41 games last year.

It seems as though the Rockies have officially committed to a rebuilding phase, as key and veteran players like Ryan McMahon and Jake Bird were traded for prospects. Next season, the Rockies will have a feel-good story to lean on as one of the team’s recently acquired prospects is Ethan Holliday, the son of former Rockies star Matt Holliday, who was taken by the team with the fourth pick in the 2025 MLB Draft.

The Rockies will see plenty of peaks and valleys this season and next, but recent signs offer hope for the future.
The team faces off against the Houston Astros on Tuesday in the quest to get at least five more wins this season and avoid being the worst MLB team of the modern era.
