Miami Marlins relief pitcher Tyler Phillips earned a save against the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday night, retiring all three batters that he faced.

Phillips recorded three consecutive outs against the Blue Jays and he did not record a walk or a strikeout during the appearance. It was just the second save that he has recorded this season, which also marked the second of his MLB career.

The performance itself was fair impressive but it was what happened both before and after he stepped on the mound that made Phillips particularly memorable for fans who happened to catch this one.

Before he came out of the bullpen, the former Phillies reliever quite literally slapped himself in the face a few times as the Stone Cold Steve Austin theme played in the ballpark.

You can watch the video of his entrance below because it is quite the spectacle:

After the game, meanwhile, that level of competitiveness not only continued but intensified.

Phillips had a conversation with Stephen Storm that did not seem seem easy for the interviewer:

MARLINS WIN!

Below is a transcription of the conversation:

Storm: You threw 32 pitches yesterday. When did you know you were going in tonight?

Phillips: When they called down.

Storm: And you were ready to go?

Phillips: Yeah. I’m ready. They call down, I’m pissed off, I’m ready to go.

Storm: Why do you get so pissed off?

Phillips: I don’t like hitters.

Storm: How did you get through that ninth?

Phillips: Throw the ball over the plate.

Storm: How long does it take you to cool down after a win?

Phillips: I never cool down.

Storm: And the slapping, what was the level of slapping when you come on?

Phillips: Pretty hard. My face is hot.

Phillips has previously said that he slaps himself to get his adrenaline going when it is time for him to lock in.

Earlier this season, he also told Jeremy Taché that he is “just a little crazy” and emphasized that he doesn’t “like” the guys in the box with a stick in their hands. This maneuver triggers a fight or flight response, helps him see red, and it brings the “wild animal” out of him.

After a few more questions, Storm admitted that Phillips was indeed scaring him and decided it was time for them to wrap it up.
