Nate Novinska had a key two-run double in the seventh inning to propel Verona to a comeback 6-4 in over Monona in the first round of the Home Talent League Final Four Championship Series on Sunday, Aug. 24, in Monona.
The Braves led the Cavaliers 4-1 after six innings. The Cavaliers erupted for five runs in the seventh. Verona’s James Rae went 3-for-5 with an RBI and one run scored. Justin Scanlon finished 2-for-5 at the plate with a run scored.
Verona’s Kyle Prindle hit a solo home run to center in the top of the third. Lefty Riley Peterson pitched four shutout innings in relief and struck out 12 to get the win. Aidan Williams started on the mound, and gave up four earned runs on eight hits in four innings. He struck out three and didn’t issue a walk.
Verona (14-1) will host Southeast League champion Fort Atkinson in the second round of the HTL Championship Series on Sunday, Aug. 31, at Stampfl Field. The Cavaliers, who have won 14 straight Sunday League games, are two more wins away from winning a fourth straight championship.
