The Los Angeles Dodgers placed left-handed pitcher Alex Vesia on the injured list with a right oblique strain ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds.

The move came out of nowhere as there was no news regarding Vesia dealing with an injury. He did last pitch on Aug. 21, though, and the move was retroactive to Aug. 23.

Blake Snell was reinstated off the paternity list to replace Vesia on the active roster.

Vesia has struggled as of late after a dominant start to the season, allowing earned runs in four of his last six outings. The fiery left-hander has made 59 appearances this season, sporting a 2.75 ERA across 52.1 innings pitched.

Vesia has impressive strikeout numbers this season, punching out 69 batters with a strikeout percentage of 33 percent, which sits in the 96th percentile of Major League Baseball. He’s essentially picked up where he left off last season, after sporting a 1.76 ERA across 67 appearances.

It remains to be seen how long Vesia will be out, but it’s not a great sign that he’s dealing with an oblique injury with just over a month to go until the postseason. Vesia is second on the team in games played in terms of pitchers, only trailing left-hander Anthony Banda, who’s made 61 appearances this season.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts will provide more on Vesia’s injury after the game, likely includiong a potential timeline for his return.

Either way, this is a huge blow to the Dodgers as they continue to fight with the San Diego Padres for first place in the National League West.
