Rockies Report, Game 132:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Hunter Goodman’s two-run homer was part of a four-run third inning that powered the Rockies to a 6-1 romp over the Houston Astros in front of 35,433 at Houston’s Daikin Park on Tuesday night.

The home run, Goodman’s 26th of the season, brought home Mickey Moniak, who had delivered an RBI single three pitches earlier to put Colorado in front to stay.

Colorado had just six hits, but made them count; three of them were in the fourth inning; two more were in the fifth, when Kyle Karros singled, Ryan Ritter reached base after being plunked by Astros starter Hunter Brown and Moniak drove them both home with a 2-2 double off the left-center field wall.

After the fifth inning, the Rockies could muster only a Tyler Freeman single and an Ezequiel Tovar walk, but thanks to Tanner Gordon’s work and three shutout innings from Jimmy Herget, Luis Peralta and Juan Mejia, the work of the third and fifth innings was more than enough.

The win snapped the Rockies’ four-game losing streak.

Colorado improved to 38-94.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Aided by some helpful defense, Tanner Gordon notched his second-consecutive quality start — and his second-straight start going exactly six innings and allowing a single earned run.

Scattering six hits and three walks over his six innings, Gordon left the bases loaded in the second inning after allowing two singles and a walk shortly after Jesús Sánchez sent a fastball left in the heart of the strike zone 439 feet into the right-center field stands over Houston’s bullpen for what proved to be Houston’s only run.

In three of his six innings, he left at least two runners on base. But Gordon had the answers needed when it mattered most, squaring his record at 5-5.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Jordan Beck made a sliding catch of a Christian Walker line drive to end the fifth inning, getting Gordon out of a two-on, two-out jam. The Astros never seriously threatened thereafter.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 50 — Percentage of Gordon’s starts in which he’s gone at least six innings, including the last two. He ranks third on the team in quality starts, even though he is sixth on the team in games started with 10.

WHAT’S NEXT: Chase Dollander looks to find his form after a pair of shaky starts in the second game of the series. The Astros counter with Framber Valdez. First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 p.m. MDT.
