The San Diego Padres close out their three-game series with the Seattle Mariners this afternoon at T-Mobile Park, looking to gain ground on the Los Angeles Dodgers, who still hold a one-game lead in the NL West.

Seattle, meanwhile, remains in the thick of both the AL West and Wild Card races. The Mariners sit just 1.5 games behind the Houston Astros, despite both teams struggling with losing records of late. They currently occupy third place in the Wild Card standings but have dropped seven of their last ten games.

This matchup has the makings of a pitchers’ duel, with Yu Darvish and Bryan Woo set to take the mound.

Darvish has endured ups and downs since returning from the IL in July, but he’s shown flashes of dominance in big moments.

Most recently, he held the Dodgers to just one run on a single hit over six innings, showcasing the depth of his arsenal. The lone blemish came on a home run by Alex Freeland off a sweeper that hung in the upper-middle part of the zone.

Woo, meanwhile, has been one of the Mariners’ most reliable arms this season. The 25-year-old enters with an 11–7 record and a 2.94 ERA, and has been particularly sharp in August, going 3–1 with a 2.08 ERA while striking out 33 in 26 innings.

He also impressed against San Diego earlier this year, limiting the Padres to just one run over seven innings.

Prediction

Expect a low-scoring contest decided by bullpen execution and timely late-inning hitting, with the Padres edging the Mariners.

Prediction: Padres 2, Mariners 1
