Where to Watch: MASN/MASN+

Camden Yards has hardly felt like home for the Orioles over the past week. This time last week, the O’s were returning home after going 4-1 in Houston and Boston, outscoring the playoff-bound Astros and Red Sox a combined 33-11. Since then, against those same teams in Baltimore, the O’s are 1-5 and have been outscored by 14 runs.
It’s hard to pinpoint an exact reason for the Orioles struggles over the last week. We’ve seen Baltimore lose a couple of barn burners, dropping games 10-7 and 9-8 last weekend against the Astros. We’ve also seen the offense disappear at times, as the O’s dropped the series opener to the Astros 7-2 and have only scored three runs combined in their last two losses to the Red Sox.
Baltimore will turn to an opener tonight, before likely handing the ball to newly recalled righty Roansy Contreras in the 2nd inning. The Orioles employed the opener strategy in Houston, and the result was a strong outing from that night’s bulk reliever, Case Povich. Povich put together a line of 5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 3 BB and 10 K, but didn’t factor in the decision as the O’s lost in extra innings.
Tony Mansolino is choosing to use LHP Dietrich Enns as tonight’s opener. The idea is to throw a left-handed opener before a right-handed long man to get the platoon advantage against the opposing lineup when he turns to the real starter.
The Orioles will look to outduel Boston’s No.2 starter, Brayan Bello. The 26-year-old right-hander is enjoying the best season of his four-year major league career, posting career bests in ERA, BAA and WHIP. Bello faced the Orioles once previously this season, finishing with a final line of 4 IP, 6 H, 2 ER 1 BB and 7 K in a 19-5 Boston win.
Bellos’ career numbers against the O’s are similarly solid, posting a 3.75 ERA and .222 in 36 career innings against Baltimore. Gunnar Henderon and Colton Cowser, as the pair are a combined 8-for-26 with a home run and, five RBIs and and OPS over 1.000.
